About Hypnosis/Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is a heightened state of awareness and concentration. We use this heightened state to help you achieve your goals. When in hypnosis you’re totally conscious and aware of everything around you. You’re always in control.

There have been many false ideas people have had over the years about hypnosis. Some fears and misconceptions that people have about hypnosis, as well as other frequently asked questions include:
  • Will you control my mind or make me do something against my will? The short answer is NO! Remember, as a hypnotherapist I am here to help YOU achieve your goals.
  • Will I be in a daze like a zombie or fall asleep? Again the answer is no. Although the hypnotic trance can vary from light to heavy, you will be aware at all times. There is a slight bit of amnesia that can occur after a session is over, but you’ll generally remember and will be aware of everything that happened. Hypnosis is a deeply relaxing state, but one where you are able to take in information. Every morning you pass through the hypnotic state as you’re waking up. It’s a deeply relaxing state but one where you’re conscious.
  • Will you keep me in hypnosis for hours? No. In fact, the hypnosis part of the session is actually the shortest part – 10 to 15 minutes. We’ll spend the majority of the session talking so that I can determine your progress, discuss anything that’s come up as well as other types of cognitive work. 10 to 15 minutes is optimal for being in the state of hypnosis and receiving suggestions. Anything longer actually works against that. The only time you’ll be in hypnosis for a longer time will be during your first session where I spend time thoroughly testing your suggestibility and then deepening your hypnotic state, and for some types of therapeutic imagery.
  • What if I can’t be hypnotized? If you can fall asleep and wake up, then you can be hypnotized. Hypnosis is a state of consciousness that we pass in and out of everyday during our waking state. Have you ever missed your exit on the freeway because your mind was elsewhere? That was hypnosis – something we call environmental hypnosis.
  • Someone tried to hypnotize me before and it didn’t work. This is actually a very common occurrence. My guess is that you weren’t hypnotized correctly. In order to hypnotize someone, you must understand how they process information. Not everyone takes in information the same way. Many hypnotists don’t understand this and tend to use a similar induction/suggesting method for everyone which usually relies on very direct, literal suggestions. However, for many people this won’t work. That is why during our first session I’ll be taking time to get to know you. I’ll test you so I’ll know how you take in and process information. Additionally, sometimes people have certain conditions and/or other blocks that might interfere with their ability to achieve the hypnotic state During the first session I’ll be able to determine what those issues might be so that we can get you in as deep a state as possible. Remember, everybody can by hypnotized. They just can’t all be hypnotized the same way.
  • Isn’t it dangerous to be messing with people’s minds?” By the phrase “messing with people’s minds”, I assume you mean that I could go into your mind and screw something up. That is definitely not the case. First of all, I’m highly trained through Hypnosis Motivation Institute, the nation’s first accredited college of hypnosis. Secondly, My goal is to help you help yourself. In that regard, hypnosis has been shown to be both a safe and effective method of bringing changes such as goal fulfillment or habit control. The methods I use are tested and SAFE.
Further, I’d like to mention that our suggestibility is open at varying times throughout any given day. Have you ever found yourself drawn into a story or movie to the point that it seems almost real to you? That’s a form of hypnosis. Have you ever been persuaded to do something or change your opinion about something? That’s a form of hypnosis too. In fact, much of our advertising world use a subtle form of hypnosis (a constant barrage) to encourage you to buy products and/or services.

My point is that we’re being bombarded every day by forms of hypnosis. If you are you worried about something “messing with your mind” you might want to look more closely at some of these other areas. When you come into my office for a session, I’m focused on helping you achieve what you want. I have no other agenda but to help you help yourself.
